Chapter 1
Angel
17520 hours.
730 days.
104 weeks.
24 months.
Two years I’ve been in here. Two years they’ve played their games with me. I’ve kept quiet, but now hell is about to be unleashed on them.
They all knew my family name, but that didn’t matter. They only had one job, make my life hell in prison.
They thought the devil lived with me, but now they will meet the devil who lives in my soul.
I stare at my reflection in the dirty, round mirror, and the only thing I see is the scar across my left eye. Another reminder of my time here, my middle finger moves along the scar from above my eyebrow, to beneath my eye. The alarm starts blazing, it's a signal telling the guards a fight has broken out somewhere. Ignoring the sounds, I get back to straightening my suit. My hand moves over my left arm as I straighten out my jacket. I check my cufflinks, pulling on my dress shirt sleeve, then finish making sure my tie is set in place. I've missed wearing my suit. Being in one again is the best feeling I've had in two years.
With my back straight, head held high, I turn to leave my cell, ducking to fit my six-foot-one frame through the metal cell.
“We will see you again.”
“It was fun.”
“Scum like you will be back.”
I hear the guards as I walk past them. I have to laugh to myself. They have no idea what hell I will be bringing into their lives.
I stop by the exit as the head guard, William Hughes, stands in front of me and I glare at him. I have a lot planned for him. I’m going to take my time, making sure I inflict so much pain on him that he’ll be begging me to put him out of his misery.
I stand my ground like I've done since day one, and every day for two years since. I've never shown fear, and I never will.
"Angel Frost, I get a feeling I'll be seeing a lot more of you," he taunts me.
My eyes lock with his, and the corner of my lip curls just slightly, but he catches the smirk before I can mask it. In a split-second, William Hughes' expression changes from holding strong animosity to wide-eyed fear, the reddened skin on his face draining of colour. He knows that his name is on a list, and he knows the moment I step one foot outside that gate, there is going to be payback like he's never seen in his whole, sad fucking life.
"You leave a devil, Mr. Frost. The devil never wins the war, only the angel," he says.
My smirk returns, forming into a wide smile that doesn't reach my eyes, and he swallows hard. "The devil was once an angel, Mr. Hughes," I remind him, and with that said, Max, my lawyer, pushes him out of the way.
As the clang of metal slams behind me, the metal scraping pierces my ears. I look up at the beautiful night sky and the stars shining bright. This is a view I never got, while banged up inside. I rarely got to see the outside. The guards made sure of that.
"Mr. Frost, we should get going. The family is waiting," Max tells me.
I take in a deep breath and savour the fresh air as it fills my lungs until I can't take anymore. When I exhale, I look at Max, then nod, letting him know I'm ready to go home.
I stopped my family from coming to visit me, I didn’t want them seeing me behind bars. The only person I allowed to visit was Max, and that was only when there was family business to talk about.
Max would tell me where the family was losing money, what stupid idea Warren or Elijah had thought of, and which girl Warren was fucking. I wanted to know every move my family was making while I was behind bars. I wanted to be able to come out and fix everything, get our money back, make sure people knew the Frost family was back, and we weren’t taking shit from anyone.
I told Max to make a list, a list of names that I gave him. He was given three rules. Tell no one the names, don’t look into the names, and last, never put the names on a computer. They were only to be written down on paper, by hand. I didn’t want to tell Max the names; I was making the list in my head, but the more time I spent in solitary confinement, I worried I would forget them, as a name was getting added each day.
Max hands me a lit cigarette. "Smoke, Mr. Frost."
I take it from him, put the orange filter to my lips, and take a long drag. Inhaling deeply, I let the nicotine course through my pulsing veins. I drop my head back, but not to sleep. Fuck no. It’s been two years since I last slept properly, and now I couldn’t even if I wanted to. I close my eyes to remember, remember what I have to do.
My time in prison gave me the chance to formulate a plan. When I first got there, all I could think about was finding the asshole responsible for getting me arrested. Once I knew I had no chance of getting the conviction overturned, all I could think about was revenge.
We had a meeting with four other families about smuggling various guns and assault rifles to the U.S., then it all hit the fucking fan when the fucking pigs showed up. I was never worried about the weapons, we never are. There's always a way to get all of that brushed under the rug. It was the drugs.
That was interesting, as my number one rule has always been, no drugs. Under no circumstance do we buy, sell, or use drugs. So, when they found a shitload of drugs in Elijah’s car, I knew that someone was going to die. Someone on our own team sold us out to the enemy, and I told the family to find out who it was so I knew who I’ll be putting a bullet in first.
We all knew that Elijah wouldn’t have lasted a day behind bars, so I told the cops it was my car. That was how I ended up being arrested and sent to one of the worst prisons in England.
The judge knew who my family was
, and he was going to make sure I did my time and remembered it. My sentence was supposed to stretch on for more years, but what Judge Russell didn't know was that my family had friends in higher places than he did, and shit got sorted, so I got off lightly.
Trust me, I wasn't happy about spending a day behind bars, never mind two years, but it was for the best. If I walked out of court with a slap on the wrist, people would talk. My men sitting on the higher chairs would've lost their jobs, and for what I have planned, I need them to be sitting right where they are. It's always about the bigger picture, the future.
There’s only one department that can do what I need, the Ministry of Justice, and we don’t just have one man there. We have two in our pocket.
Max opens my door. "Mr. Frost, we're home."
I take a step out of the car and take in the air of my hometown, Sinwick London. I see all the cars parked on my drive. My family apparently had to have a gathering at my house. How the fuck did they get a key to my house? I glance over at Max, and raise my brow in question
With a small smile as he looks at me, he says, "Mr. Frost, your mother said if I didn't give her the key, she'd cut off my balls. She scares me."
I shake my head. We all know that my mother wouldn't hurt him. She likes to play games with people, my father being one of them.
"She only got them this morning," he adds.
Well, he stood his ground for a long time. I thought he would’ve handed them over the second I was sent away.
Max walks up the stairs and knocks on the door. "Welcome home, Mr. Frost." The door opens, and the first person I see is my mother.
She runs down the stairs and wraps her arms around my neck. "Angel, my baby, I've missed you." Her hands move to my face, cupping my cheeks. Her tear-filled eyes stare into mine, searching for her son, and I don't know how to tell her that he left a long fucking time ago.
“How much of my son have I lost?” she whispers.
I cup her face. “I’m still here, just brought the devil with me.” I wink, making her smile.
“Come on, everyone is here.” She smiles wide, causing her lids to spill over, and I wipe the tears away from her cheeks with my thumbs.
As I enter the house, I shut the door behind me and make my way through, nodding at the guests as I walk past them. I shake their hands, and they all know me well enough to understand that if I don't want to talk, I won't.
Warren grabs my face. "I'm so fucking happy you're out. As a welcome home gift, I got you two presents," he tells me as he looks over at the two whores to the left. Now I can't say that they are whores for sure, but if what Max has told me about Warren is right, I'm guessing that they are.
He can fuck any girl in Sinwick. Why he still fucks whores I will never know.
My eyes move to the person behind Warren, my older brother, Elijah. Gwen, his wife, pushes him to move towards me.
My hand grabs the back of his neck and, for a moment, I just look at him, waiting for him to bring his eyes to mine. Elijah and I have always been close, with only eighteen months between us. We have a connection. We know what the other is planning. We’ve always been there for each other, no matter what.
“I told you two years ago. None of this was your fault. I’m home now. Let the guilt go,” I tell him, putting pressure on the back of his neck.
Max told me that Elijah was finding all of this hard, and started smoking and snorting shit he knew I would kill him for. I’ve made it clear this family won’t touch shit like that. Elijah is one of the men I would do anything to protect. My brothers are the only people I would die for, them and Pike. They are my world.
“Angel…”
"I'm home," I cut him off, and he nods. "You smoke that shit again, I will cut you." I push him away in a playful way and make my way to Gwen to give her a kiss on the cheek.
I hear Warren behind me, “Angel, Angel, this is…”
“I don’t care. Get every whore out of my house,” I tell him loud enough so that everyone in the room can hear me. Which also means that I want everyone out of my house.
Sometimes I do wonder if my family know me at all. I’m the last person who enjoys the company of others, especially in my house where I don’t allow people to be.
I walk over to my mother. “Where’s dad?” I ask.
“In the office.”
I make my way over to the door before my mother can finish the sentence.
I enter my office, closing the door behind me, so everyone knows not to come in. My dad turns around as I walk over to the desk and, for a moment, we stand there watching each other.
"It's good to have you home, son." He walks around the desk and stands in front of me. "You shouldn't have kept us away," my father says, choking on his words. My father and I have never been the type to get too emotional or show emotions to others. Well, I never have, and I don't think I've ever seen my father cry.
My relationship with my father is different from the one I have with my mother. I love them both, but I respect my father. I don't respect my mother. My mother is a whore and fucks who she wants, but my father still keeps her around. He always says a family together is stronger than a family apart. I think that's a load of shit. I know they've had problems for a while now, even before I went to prison, and I told him then to kick her out. But she's still here. Why? Only he knows the answer to that question.
“It was the best way.” I pull him closer so I can hug him. I knew my dad would have kept everyone safe, but inside he would be dying.
“Best for who?”
“Everyone,” I tell him as I walk over to the whiskey table and pour myself a glass. “Have we found anything out?” I ask him.
"Straight to business, I see. No, the first year…"
I planned to find who framed us, but my dad told Max to tell me that he wanted to do that himself. Elijah and Warren were going to make that right. They were going to make sure everyone knew that if you mess with one Frost, you mess with them all. Max came to visit me six months into my sentence to tell me that my dad found them, and without even a blink, he put a bullet in his head.
It showed a lot of families, that just because I was behind bars, it didn’t mean they could fuck with the Frost family. We will get revenge for what anyone does to us.
I cut my dad off. "I know, Max told me everything that was happening." I down the whole glass of whiskey, letting the sweet liquid run down my throat, and turn to face him. "Things are changing, Dad. I've told Elijah to stop the drugs. Warren I will sort out later. And for you, you're kicking mum out, and buying her, her own house," I tell him.
I know my dad and Elijah are older than me, but I also understand that this business runs more on my say than theirs. It's always been like that. I think it started when my granddad ran ideas with me, and I began to say more. My dad, nor my brothers, have ever said anything about it, and I know they never will.
“Angel…”
“No,” I shouted, slamming the glass on the table. “She is fucking man after man. I will buy her a house, and she will still be in the business. But you’re not going to lie down and let her fuck a man, then come home to your bed.” That is where my mother lost all my respect.
If she just left my dad, I wouldn't hate her for it, but she didn't. She let another man touch her then came home like nothing happened. She stopped respecting my father, and I stopped respecting her.
The only reason he doesn’t want to kick her out is because of the family.
“This family is strong. We will stay strong. But people will think we’re weak, for letting her in the house.” I tell him as I light up my cigarette. “Things are changing, Dad, and everyone will see it. For two years, people thought that one member being behind bars weakened us, but you showed everyone it didn't. You showed them we are just as strong, and we are. Although, Max might have mentioned that the guns have been taking a little bit of a dip."
Max told me that a town about thirty minutes away from us has started their own workshop an
d they’re hiding the guns behind a strip club. Word around the cell was that they're selling weapons. That doesn't bother me, as we sell guns too, but we sell them out of the country so no one on my streets will get hurt. This new strip club is selling them on the streets, to young lads who can kill anyone. The fucking gun crime in London is high enough without giving them to young kids. So, I want that fixed.
"Son, we will take what was taken." He walks over to the table and pours himself a drink. "And until we show everyone, we’re back together and strong. Your mother will stay," he tells me.
I keep my mouth shut for now, but I'm going to make sure my dad isn't walked over by her anymore. I turn to the door as I hear someone opening it, and I already know who it is. There is only one person who would open the door, knowing very well I'm talking business in here, and that person knows I won't say anything to them. Only one person that today, of all days, won't care either. Ellie, my little sister.
I place my glass on the table, my hands in my pocket as she stands by the door and stares at me. Her eyes fill with tears as she runs over to me. As Ellie wraps her arms around me, I take a step back, so I don't lose my balance.
My arms fold around her as I give her a hug and hear her crying.
“I’m home now,” I say, softly placing a kiss on the top of her head. Her grip tightens around me. I hold her for as long as she needs me to. She fought Max to come visit me, even gave Max a black eye for saying no to her.
“So this boyfriend…”
"How do you know about him? Elijah and Warren don't even know about him." Ellie pulls away from me, and the look of shock on her face is enough to bring a smile to my lips.
"I make sure I know what the family is doing. Tomorrow bring him to the club," I tell her as I pick up my whisky glass. Max told me enough about him, and after two minutes into that conversation, I hated him.
"I like him, Angel." Ellie tries to sell her boyfriend to me but stops the moment I look at her.
She is my little sister. She might like him, but that doesn’t mean I have to.
